Hickman County

Hickman County has two schools serving preschool through grade 12: Hickman County Elementary School (PK–6, 443 students) and Hickman County High School (grades 7–12, 316 students). Results show strengths in several subjects, but not consistently across grades. The schools report different tested grades, so their scores are not like-for-like comparisons; the state also suppressed the high school’s science results. The clearest standout is the high school’s writing proficiency, which was far above the state in both reported grades.

Hickman County High School led its state comparisons in grade 8 writing, at 81% versus 48% statewide, a 33-point advantage, and grade 11 writing, at 68% versus 47%, a 21-point advantage. Its grade 10 reading was 68% versus 49% statewide, and grade 7 reading and math were each 17 points above state results. Hickman County Elementary School’s clearest high point was grade 5 reading: 67% versus 51% statewide, a 16-point advantage. The clearest below-state results were grade 3 math at the elementary school, 13 points below state, and grade 11 editing and mechanics and social studies at the high school, 8 and 7 points below. For 2025–26, SchoolDigger ranked the high school 83rd of 262 Kentucky high schools and the elementary school 302nd of 684 elementary schools; both received 3 stars.

Results have improved in several areas, though not across the board. Elementary average reading proficiency across grades 3–6 rose from 44% in 2024–25 to 56% in 2025–26, while writing increased 19 points and social studies 17 points. At the high school, average reading rose 13 points and math 6 points across matched grades, but writing fell 6 points, editing and mechanics 23, and social studies 13. SchoolDigger’s percentiles also shifted over time: elementary moved from 55th to 34th to 56th, while the high school moved from 89th to 51st to 68th. As context, the 2024–25 free/reduced lunch eligible measure was 62% at the elementary school and 58% at the high school; student-teacher ratios were 14.2 and 13.1, respectively. These figures describe the schools but do not explain their results.
