Summary:

The Henry County school list includes five schools serving elementary through high-school grades, with 1,875 students in all. The biggest difference in the results is by school level: elementary schools average 34% in math and 35% in reading, compared with state averages of 43% and 50%; middle-school averages are above the state in both subjects. The clearest overall finding is that elementary reading results trail the state most, while middle and high schools have notable strengths.

Eastern Elementary stands out in fourth grade, with 79% proficient in reading and 64% in math—the highest elementary results in those grades. But results vary sharply among elementary schools: fourth-grade reading ranges from 21% at New Castle Elementary to 79% at Eastern, and fourth-grade math ranges from 21% to 64%. New Castle also leads in several other areas, including fifth-grade reading and math results are not its strength; it leads in fifth-grade reading, social studies, and editing and mechanics, as well as third-grade math. Henry County Middle School exceeded the state in five of six tested reading and math comparisons, while Henry County High School was 7 percentage points above the state in 10th-grade math and 20 points above in 11th-grade writing. SchoolDigger ranks the high school at the 65th statewide percentile and the middle school at the 64th; elementary ranks range from Eastern’s 33rd to New Castle’s 8th.

Across 42 matched grade-and-subject results, the average school-to-state gap widened by about 3 percentage points between years, but the pattern differed by school: it improved by about 6 points at the high school and widened by about 9 at Eastern and 5 at the middle school. School characteristics offer context, not an explanation for these differences: 2024–2025 free/reduced lunch eligible measures range from 48% at Campbellsburg Elementary to 58% at New Castle, while student-teacher ratios range from 13.0 at Eastern to 16.3 at New Castle. Grade-by-grade results vary, so an individual school’s standout scores do not describe every grade or subject.
