High Schools in Hardin County

The four high schools in Hardin County serve grades 6–12: Central Hardin, North Hardin and John Hardin are conventional grades 9–12 schools, while Hardin County Day Treatment Center serves grades 6–12 and has eight students. The Day Treatment Center’s 2025–26 test scores are state-suppressed, so score comparisons cover the three conventional high schools. The most important pattern is a clear divide: Central and John average about 51% across six subjects, compared with about 41% at North.

John Hardin leads in math, reading and writing, scoring 58%, 63% and 63%, respectively; those results are 6, 5 and 6 points above the next-highest school. Central Hardin leads in science, social studies and editing and mechanics, with 32%, 56% and 53%. Its social studies score is 10 points ahead of John’s, and its science score is 4 points higher. North Hardin is lowest in all six subjects, trailing John by 6 to 16 points depending on the subject; North also falls below the state in reading and science. Central and John are nearly even overall, averaging 51.3% and 51.5%, despite Central enrolling more than twice as many students.

Results improved overall from 2024–25 to 2025–26, but gains were concentrated at Central: its average increase was about 9 points per subject, compared with about 2 at John and less than 1 at North. Across the three schools, the average gap over the state widened from about 5 to 9 points. SchoolDigger ranked Central 32nd of 262 Kentucky high schools, John 34th and North 104th in 2025–26. For 2024–25, free/reduced lunch eligible shares were about 39% at Central, 49% at North and 48% at John; John and North’s similar shares accompanied a roughly 10-point difference in their six-subject averages. Student-teacher ratios were 19.3 at Central, 18.1 at North and 15.9 at John. Chronic absenteeism exceeded the state rate at all three schools, ranging from 24% at John to 30% at North, compared with 24% statewide.
