Summary:

Zip code 66049 has four Lawrence elementary schools serving kindergarten through grade 5, with 1,812 students total and enrollments from 398 to 560. As a group, their average results were above the state in ELA, math, and science—by 18, 18, and 17 percentage points, respectively—but the most important finding is how sharply results differ from school to school.

Langston Hughes Elementary stands out as the clear leader: it scored 79% in ELA, 80% in math, and 81% in science, leading the next-highest school by 11 points in ELA, 18 in math, and 29 in science. SchoolDigger ranks it 9th of 657 statewide, in the 99th percentile, with five stars. Quail Run Elementary is second in ELA and math, at 68% and 62%. At the other end, Sunset Hill Elementary had the lowest all-grades scores—48% in ELA, 39% in math, and 36% in science—and trailed the area leader by 31, 40, and 45 points. Its third graders were above state results in ELA and math, but its fifth graders were below by 10 points in ELA, 13 in math, and 9 in science. Deerfield Elementary sits between the leaders and Sunset Hill and exceeded state results in all three subjects.

Math improved at all four schools from the prior year, and the four-school average rose 4 points; ELA increased at three schools, while the average rose 2 points. Science was mixed: Langston Hughes and Deerfield gained, but Quail Run fell 9 points and Sunset Hill fell 4; the group average declined 1 point. SchoolDigger’s rankings also show different paths: Langston Hughes improved from 16th to 9th over three years, while Sunset Hill moved from 364th to 403rd. A smaller student–teacher ratio alone does not identify the highest-scoring school: Sunset Hill’s was 13.9, compared with 19.1 at Langston Hughes. With just four schools, area averages do not describe every school’s results.
