Junction City Middle School

Summary:

Junction City Middle School is a public middle school serving 938 students in grades 6-8 in Junction City, Kansas, which is part of the Geary County Schools district. The school stands out for its relatively diverse student population, with nearly half of the students identifying as non-White, but its academic performance has been consistently below the state and district averages.

While Junction City Middle School's overall performance on state assessments ranks in the lower half of Kansas middle schools, the school performs particularly well for certain student subgroups, such as African American, Hispanic, Pacific Islander, and English Language Learner students, who rank in the top 25% of their peers statewide. However, the school struggles with the performance of other subgroups, such as Military Connected students, who rank in the bottom 25% of Kansas middle schools. Compared to nearby schools like Abilene Middle School and Susan B. Anthony Middle School, Junction City Middle School generally underperforms on state assessments and has a lower statewide ranking.

One significant factor that may be contributing to the school's lower academic performance is its high poverty rate, with around 60% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, which is significantly higher than nearby schools like Fort Riley Middle School (37.75%) and Abilene Middle School (50%). Addressing the needs of the school's high-poverty student population and identifying strategies to improve academic outcomes across all student groups may be key focus areas for the school and Geary County Schools district.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote If I could give this school a 0 I absolutely would. I wish I would have looked at ratings and comments before sending her to this school. We are moving because the education is Kansas is absolutely terrible. They don't concentrate on actual learning subjects, they concentrate on bullying. I know bullying is a huge problem, but so is lack of education. Instead of talking to the kids that are actually doing the bullying they are putting ideas in kids heads. This is education system is worse then Florida's and that's bad. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
