The four schools in this area serve elementary through high school—two elementary schools, one middle school and one high school—with 642 students altogether. Across the schools, average proficiency is 42% in science, above the state’s 38%, and 41% in ELA, below the state’s 46%. Math is the clearest shared concern: the four-school average is 29%, 12 percentage points below the state’s 41%, and every school’s math result is below the state figure.

Appanoose Elementary School leads all-grades ELA at 55% and math at 36%; its ELA result is 4 points above the next-highest school, Williamsburg Elementary School, at 51%. West Franklin Middle School leads science at 51% and is the only school with eighth-grade math above the state result: 44% versus 40%. Williamsburg is also second in science, at 47%, but has the lowest all-grades math score, 24%; its fifth-grade math result is just 7%, compared with 45% statewide. West Franklin High School has the lowest ELA and science results, at 26% and 24%, respectively, yet its 2023–2024 graduation rate was 95%, above the state’s 90%.

Recent results moved in different directions: the four-school ELA average rose 3 points from 2024–2025 to 2025–2026, while math fell 6 points. For the three schools with comparable science figures, the average rose 5 points, while the state result declined. SchoolDigger rankings also diverge: from 2023–2024 to 2025–2026, the high school fell from the 63rd to the 21st percentile, while Appanoose, Williamsburg and the middle school each gained between 5 and 11 percentile points. Attendance differs too: chronic absenteeism was 8% at Appanoose and 12% at Williamsburg, compared with 38% at the middle school and 29% at the high school. The elementary schools also have different contexts—Appanoose’s student-teacher ratio is 10.6 and free/reduced-lunch rate 45%, versus 9.2 and 63% at Williamsburg—without these figures explaining the schools’ score differences.
