Summary:
The area has two schools serving prekindergarten through grade 12: Plainville Elementary serves PK–6, with 256 students, and Plainville High serves grades 7–12, with 197 students. In 2025–26, Elementary had higher all-grades proficiency than High in English language arts (ELA), math, and science, though only its science result was above the state figure. High was below the state in all three subjects. The clearest finding is the sharp divide between the schools, especially in science and math.
Plainville Elementary leads the two-school group in every subject: its proficiency was 35% in ELA, 39% in math, and 54% in science, compared with 27%, 17%, and 16% at Plainville High. Those are school-to-school gaps of 8, 21, and 38 percentage points, respectively. Elementary was 16 points above the state in science and 2 points below in math; High was 22 points below the state in science, 24 below in math, and 19 below in ELA. SchoolDigger ranks Elementary 413th of 657 schools, in the 37th percentile, and High 310th of 340, in the 9th percentile; these are SchoolDigger rankings, not state ratings.
Results changed unevenly. Elementary gained 11 points in math and 28 in science from 2024–25 to 2025–26, while ELA rose by less than 1 point. High’s math rose 2 points, while its ELA and science each increased by less than 1 point. Grade-level results also show variation at Elementary: fourth-grade math was 27 points below the state, while its third-, fifth-, and sixth-grade math results were above. High’s reported graduation rate was a strong counterpoint to its test results: 97%, compared with 90% statewide. Elementary’s student–teacher ratio was 14.4, versus 11.1 at High, and free/reduced-lunch rates were 45% and 41%; these are context, not explanations for the score differences. Because the schools serve different grade spans, their all-grades results are not direct like-for-like comparisons.
