Ellis

The Ellis area has two schools serving prekindergarten through grade 12: Washington Elementary (PK–6; 182 students) and Ellis Junior/Senior High (grades 7–12; 161 students). In 2025–2026, the schools’ average proficiency was 55% in English language arts, 43% in math, and 55% in science, compared with state results of 46%, 41%, and 38%. Science is the area’s clearest shared strength: both schools were above the state, and their average advantage was 17 percentage points.

The schools are closest in English language arts and science, but differ more in math. Ellis Junior/Senior High led in English language arts at 57%, versus 54% at Washington Elementary, and in science at 57% versus 53%. Washington Elementary led in math, 48% to 38%; it was 7 points above the state, while Ellis Junior/Senior High was 3 points below. Grade-level results also reveal a weak spot: Washington fifth-grade proficiency was 35% in English language arts and 29% in math, compared with state results of 51% and 45%. SchoolDigger ranks Washington at the 60th percentile among elementary schools (3 stars) and Ellis Junior/Senior High at the 82nd percentile among high schools (4 stars).

Recent score trends diverged: Washington’s results fell in all three subjects from 2024–2025 to 2025–2026, including declines of 10 points in English language arts and 14 points in science. Ellis Junior/Senior High’s English language arts result rose 15 points, while science fell 6 points and math was nearly unchanged, rising by less than 1 point. The two-school average advantage over the state narrowed by 1 point in math and 10 points in science, while widening by 3 points in English language arts. Other contrasts may help families compare: Washington had lower chronic absenteeism (6% versus 16%), while Ellis Junior/Senior High had the lower student-teacher ratio (9.4 versus 14.1); their free/reduced-lunch rates were 41% and 36%, respectively.
