Herington

Herington has three schools serving prekindergarten through grade 12: Herington Elementary (PK–5), Herington Middle School (6–8), and Herington High (9–12), with 414 students in total. In the 2025–2026 results, the three-school average is below the state in ELA and math and close to the state in science. The clearest overall finding is that elementary results are much stronger than those at the two secondary schools.

Herington Elementary leads in all three subjects, with 46% proficient in ELA, 44% in math, and 59% in science; it is above the state in each, particularly in science. Its science result is 31 points higher than middle school’s and 34 points higher than high school’s. The secondary schools have weaker results overall: Herington Middle School has the lowest ELA result, 26%, which is 20 points below the state and 4 points below high school. Herington High has the lowest math and science results, at 30% in each—11 points below the state in math and 13 points below in science. Middle school’s science result, 29%, is 3 points higher than high school’s. Elementary’s strong overall results also mask grade-level variation: its fourth-grade math is 15 points below the state, while fifth-grade math is 10 points above.

Recent movement is mixed: the area’s average ELA score rose by 2 points from 2024–2025 to 2025–2026, narrowing its state gap slightly, while its average math score fell by 2 points and the gap widened from 3 to 7 points. SchoolDigger’s ranking percentiles have fallen since 2023–2024 at all three schools: from 67 to 49 at elementary, 67 to 29 at high school, and 29 to 14 at middle school; high school did rise from 27 to 29 in the latest year. Reported student-teacher ratios are 11.5 at elementary, 12.9 at middle, and 10.0 at high school. Free/reduced-lunch rates range from 66% at high school to 74% at elementary; these are observations, not explanations for score differences.
