Summary:
Kiowa County has two schools serving prekindergarten through grade 12: Kiowa County Elementary School (PK–5, 130 students) and Kiowa County Junior High/High School (grades 6–12, 131 students). In 2025–26, both schools’ all-grade math results were well above the state’s 41%: 60% at the elementary school and 58% at the junior/high school. ELA was less consistent: the elementary school recorded 44%, below the state’s 46%, while the junior/high school recorded 50%. The clearest area-wide takeaway is that math is a shared strength, while elementary ELA is the most notable academic concern.
The schools stand out in different subjects and measures. The junior/high school had higher all-grade ELA and science results—50% and 54%, compared with 44% in each subject at the elementary school—and its science result was 15 percentage points above the state. The elementary school led in math by 2 percentage points and had much lower chronic absenteeism: 3%, versus 16% at the junior/high school; both rates were below the state’s 18%. The junior/high school’s 2023–24 graduation rate was 94%, 5 percentage points above the state. Its student-teacher ratio was 7.8, compared with 10.5 at the elementary school. Reported free/reduced-lunch rates were 34% at the junior/high school and 47% at the elementary school; these are contextual differences, not explanations of results.
Recent trends were sharply different: from 2024–25 to 2025–26, the elementary school’s proficiency fell by 11 percentage points in ELA, 4 in math and 23 in science. The junior/high school’s ELA fell by 4 points, while math rose by 4 and science rose by 26 points, following a 28% science result the prior year. Grade-level results also reveal ELA weak spots: grade 4 at the elementary school was 17 points below its state comparison, and grade 8 at the junior/high school was 7 points below. SchoolDigger rankings rose for the junior/high school, from 246th of 318 schools (23rd percentile) in 2023–24 to 9th of 340 (97th percentile) in 2025–26; the elementary school moved from 135th of 653 (79th percentile) to 280th of 657 (57th percentile). Because the schools serve different grade spans, their all-grade results are not like-for-like comparisons.
