Deerfield

Deerfield has three small schools serving prekindergarten through grade 12: Deerfield Elementary (PK–5, 123 students), Deerfield Middle School (grades 6–8, 49 students) and Deerfield High (grades 9–12, 72 students). The most pressing area-wide concern is mathematics: the schools’ average proficiency was 17%, compared with 41% statewide, and results ranged from 28% at Elementary to 0% at High.

Elementary stands out in mathematics and science, while Middle leads in ELA. Elementary’s math rate of 28% was 17 percentage points above the average of the other two schools; its science rate of 38% was nearly level with the state’s 38%. Middle had the highest ELA rate, at 33%, followed by Elementary at 31% and High at 15%; Middle was 7 points above the schools’ average but 13 points below the state. High’s math and ELA results were especially low—0% and 15%, respectively. One exception is grade 11 science at High: 31% proficiency, compared with 30% statewide.

Recent results show sharply different school trajectories. Middle improved by 11 percentage points in ELA and 20 points in math from 2024–25 to 2025–26; meanwhile, ELA fell by 11 points at Elementary and 14 at High. The average ELA gap to the state widened by 6 points, while the math gap narrowed by just 1 point. SchoolDigger gives each school one star, with statewide rankings in the 14th–18th percentiles: Elementary ranks 538 of 657, Middle 307 of 368 and High 292 of 340. Student-teacher ratios range from 7.8 at High to 12.2 at Elementary; these figures do not, by themselves, explain achievement differences. School-wide rates cover different grade spans, and small enrollments mean results may shift with a relatively small number of students.
