Summary:
Chanute Public Schools includes three schools serving grades PK–12, with 1,569 students in all: Chanute Elementary School (PK–5), Chanute Middle School (6–8), and Chanute High (9–12). The three-school average in 2025–26 was closest to the state in math and farthest below it in science: math averaged 41%, less than 1 point below the state, while science averaged 31%, 7 points below. The clearest overall pattern is uneven results: high-school math stands out, while elementary results are below the state in every subject.
Chanute High leads in ELA and math, with 48% and 50% proficiency; those results are 2 and 9 points above the state, respectively. Its math score is 15 points higher than the average of the other two schools. At the other end, Chanute Elementary School has the group’s lowest math and science results, at 34% and 27%—7 and 11 points below the state. Chanute Middle School leads local science at 35%, but remains 3 points below the state. SchoolDigger ranks the high school in the 74th percentile (4 stars), the middle school in the 46th (2 stars), and the elementary school in the 25th (1 star).
Recent changes are strongest in math: scores rose 12 points at Chanute High, 6 at Chanute Middle School, and 2 at Chanute Elementary School, while the state rose 2 points. ELA improved at the high and middle schools but fell 4 points at elementary; SchoolDigger’s rankings also show elementary declining from the 34th to 25th percentile since 2023–24, while middle moved from the 43rd to 46th. Staffing and income measures offer context, not explanations: student-teacher ratios range from 11.7 at elementary to 13.1 at high, and free/reduced-lunch rates from 67% to 53%. Chronic absenteeism is above the state’s 18% at elementary (21%) and high (19%), but just below it at middle (17%).
