Summary:

Norwich, Kansas, has three schools serving preschool through grade 12, with 234 students across Norwich Elementary School, Norwich Middle School and Norwich High. The area’s overall results look close to state rates, but the school and grade-level differences are substantial: the unweighted school averages were about 2 points above the state in ELA and science and essentially even in math. The most important concern is middle school, especially eighth grade: its all-grades rates were 41% in ELA, 33% in math and 27% in science, while eighth-grade results were 15 points below the state in ELA, 21 points below in math and 12 points below in science.

Norwich Elementary School leads the area in ELA and math, at 56% and 47%, respectively—10 and 6 points above state rates. Its fifth graders stood out even more, with ELA and math 17 and 19 points above state results. Norwich High leads science at 52%, 14 points above the state, and has the strongest SchoolDigger standing: 55th of 340 Kansas high schools, in the 84th percentile and rated four stars. By contrast, Norwich Middle School ranks in the 33rd percentile and has the lowest all-grades results in each subject, 5 to 11 points below state rates. These schoolwide patterns have exceptions: sixth-grade middle-school ELA and seventh-grade math were above state rates.

Recent results are mixed rather than improving across the board. From 2024–2025 to 2025–2026, ELA fell by 4 points at Elementary and 7 at High, while Middle gained 3; in math, Elementary was nearly unchanged, High fell by 1 point and Middle by 5. SchoolDigger’s percentile rank rose from the 68th to the 84th at High, edged up from the 51st to the 53rd at Elementary, and fell from the 45th to the 33rd at Middle. Staffing ratios are similar—9.2 to 9.5 students per teacher—while reported free/reduced-lunch rates range from 38% at High to 50% at Middle. Attendance is a notable difference: chronic absenteeism was 29% at High, versus 12% at Middle and 9% at Elementary. These figures describe schools with different grade spans and do not by themselves explain why results differ.
