Summary:

Lindsborg’s four schools serve 1,216 students across elementary, middle and high school, as well as a virtual charter program: Soderstrom Elementary enrolls 318, Smoky Valley Middle School 253, Smoky Valley High 243 and Smoky Valley Virtual Charter School 402. Results vary considerably by school and subject. The biggest concern is the virtual school’s low performance in most comparisons, especially mathematics, although its eighth-grade ELA result is close to the middle school’s.

Soderstrom leads the 2025–2026 all-grades ELA and math results, with 62% and 57% proficient—about 16 percentage points above state results in each subject. Smoky Valley High leads science at 52%, compared with 48% at Smoky Valley Middle and 38% statewide. The virtual school has the lowest all-grades scores: 31% in ELA, 13% in math and 16% in science; its ELA and math results are 15 and 28 points below the state. The difference also appears in tenth grade: High scores 46% in ELA and 39% in math, compared with 22% and 9% at the virtual school. Eighth-grade ELA is a notable exception, with 52% at Middle and 50% at Virtual.

Recent trends favor Middle and show a sharp decline at High: Middle gained 11 percentage points in ELA and 5 in math over two years, while High fell 15 and 21 points. Soderstrom also declined, by 6 points in ELA and 3 in math; Virtual improved by 7 and 3 points but remained lowest. Across the four schools, average results fell by 1 point in ELA and 4 in math, while state averages rose by 1 and 2 points. SchoolDigger’s statewide percentile ranking rose for Middle, from the 52nd to the 80th percentile; High went from the 52nd to the 95th, then to the 81st, and Soderstrom moved from the 86th to the 79th. Reported student-teacher ratios are 10.1 at High, 14.0 at Middle and 14.7 at Soderstrom; the virtual school’s ratio is not reported. Its free/reduced-lunch rate is 75%, compared with 36%–42% at the other schools—a difference in reported context, not an explanation of achievement. All-grades results cover different grade spans, so grade-specific comparisons are more direct.
