Summary

Southwestern High School is a public school in Hanover, Indiana, serving about 350 students in grades 9–12 as part of the Southwestern-Jefferson County Con district. In 2025–2026 it ranked 251st of 415 Indiana high schools — roughly the 40th percentile, or 2 stars — placing it in the lower-middle tier statewide. The school has rebounded from a weak stretch when it fell to 1 star and ranked near the 16th percentile in 2020–2021, and has held steady at 2 stars since 2021–2022. It also serves the highest-poverty population among nearby comparison schools, with 53.14% of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch in 2024–2025.

Its clearest strengths are engagement and completion. The 2024–2025 graduation rate was 98.7%, up from 91.4% the year before and above Indiana's 89.7%, and chronic absenteeism was 15.5%, below the state's 16.7% and far below Madison Consolidated High School's 47.2% and Scottsburg Senior High School's 35.7%. Science is the academic bright spot: 51.39% of students were proficient in Biology in 2025–2026, the highest among the nearby schools. Henryville Junior & Senior High School sits at a similar overall rank (39th percentile) but shows the opposite pattern, with stronger SAT scores and much lower Biology proficiency.

The main concern is math. Only 9.59% of students met the SAT math benchmark in 2025–2026 — below Indiana's 25.6% and lower than every nearby school except Austin High School's 9.09% — and it has fallen steadily from 22.08% three years earlier. This gap stands out because the school graduates nearly all of its students, spends $13,707 per student (second-highest in the group), and keeps class sizes moderate, yet math achievement is the second-lowest locally. Low-income students remain the weakest subgroup, at the 21st percentile in 2025–2026. Overall, Southwestern supports students well enough to keep them attending and graduating, but has not yet translated that into math proficiency.
