ZIP code 61938 includes four schools serving students from elementary through high school, with 2,740 students in Arland D. Williams Junior Elementary School, Riddle Elementary School, Mattoon Middle School and Mattoon High School in Mattoon CUSD 2. Results differ by grade and subject, so the schools are best compared within similar grades and tests. The clearest broad academic standout is Williams, which was above state results in both all-grades elementary subjects.

Williams led the elementary schools overall in 2025–2026, with 61% proficient in ELA and 42% in math; Riddle had 51% and 39%, respectively, and was below state results in both. The gap between the elementary schools was 10 percentage points in all-grades ELA and 3 points in math. Riddle nevertheless had a 3rd-grade math bright spot: 59%, compared with 52% at Williams and 49% statewide. In 5th grade, Williams led Riddle by 26 points in ELA and 16 points in math.
