Summary:

ZIP code 61102 has six schools: three serving K–5, two serving K–8, and Rockford Envrnmntl Science Academy, serving grades 6–8. In 2025–26, the schools’ unweighted average proficiency was 27% in English language arts (ELA) and 14% in mathematics, compared with state results of 56% and 40%. The most important finding is that all six schools were below the state in both subjects.

Barbour Two-Way Lang Immersion stands out at the top, leading in ELA at 48% and mathematics at 23%; those results were 26 and 10 percentage points above the averages at the other five schools. Barbour was still 8 points below the state in ELA and 17 points below in mathematics. Legacy Academy of Excellence Charter School was a close second in all-grades ELA at 47%, and exceeded the state in fourth-grade ELA (65% versus 56%) and sixth-grade ELA (60% versus 59%). Other school characteristics do not point to one simple choice: student–teacher ratios range from 13.0 at Ellis Elementary School to 29.2 at Legacy, while chronic absenteeism ranges from 6% at Barbour to 59% at Legacy. All six schools report the same low-income measure, free/reduced lunch eligible, for school year 2024–25, ranging from 20% at Legacy to 93% at Ellis; these figures provide context, not an explanation for results.
