Summary:

The seven schools in ZIP code 60090 include four elementary schools, two middle schools and one high school, serving students from elementary grades through high school. Results cover 2024–2025 and 2025–2026; among elementary schools, average proficiency in 2025–2026 was 40% in English language arts (ELA), 31% in math and 37% in fifth-grade science, all below state results. Math was closer to the state than ELA, but the schools’ results varied widely. The clearest finding is that Booth Tarkington Elementary School was the strongest elementary performer across all three reported measures.

Booth Tarkington led elementary ELA with 58%, ahead of the next-highest school, Eugene Field Elementary School, at 43%—a 15-point gap. Booth also led in math, 52% to Eugene Field’s 28%, and fifth-grade science, 60% to Mark Twain Elementary School’s 32%. The three other elementary schools were below state results in all three measures. Among middle schools, Jack London Middle School led Oliver W Holmes Middle School by 13 points in ELA, 10 in math and 18 in eighth-grade science. Holmes had the lowest current middle-school results and remained below the state, though it improved notably.

Results rose over the two years for the elementary and middle-school groups in ELA and math, but gains varied: Holmes improved 14 points in ELA and 8 in math, while Mark Twain’s math result fell 1 point. SchoolDigger’s percentile ranking rose for Booth, from 48 in 2023–2024 to 59 in 2025–2026, while it declined for Mark Twain, from 27 to 9, and Jack London, from 54 to 36. The reported free/reduced lunch eligible measure for 2024–2025 was 45% at Booth, compared with 75% at Eugene Field and 80% at Walt Whitman Elementary School; these figures are context, not an explanation for test results. Wheeling High School had below-state 11th-grade ACT results in all three subjects, while its ninth-grade PreACT ELA and science were slightly above state results. Its graduation rate was 90%, close to the state’s 90%. These patterns describe results and do not establish what causes them.
