Summary

Proviso West High School is a public school in Hillside, in Chicago’s western suburbs, serving grades 9–12 with 1,870 students as part of Proviso Township HSD 209. The most important concern for families is that the school’s latest test results are well below state and district results in every tested subject, and are usually among the lowest at nearby schools.

In 2025–2026, grade 11 proficiency at Proviso West was 17% in English language arts, 9% in math and 17% in science—about 31 to 33 percentage points below state results and 13 to 15 points below district results. Among nearby schools, Proviso West was lowest in math and tied or near the bottom in most other tested subjects. Ninth graders did better than tenth graders in all three PreACT subjects; the largest difference was in English language arts, at 31% versus 20%. A striking nearby contrast is Proviso Math and Science Academy: its grade 11 results were 73% in English language arts, 60% in math and 67% in science. Its 2024–2025 free/reduced lunch eligibility was similar to Proviso West’s—54% compared with 53%—though those figures do not explain the difference in results.

Some indicators are improving, but substantial challenges remain. Chronic absenteeism fell from 84% in 2022–2023 to 48% in 2025–2026, yet remained above the state’s 24% and the district’s 43%. SchoolDigger ranked Proviso West at the 4th percentile statewide in 2025–2026, with zero stars, down from one star the prior year; it places the district at the 19th percentile. The school’s student-teacher ratio was 16.8 in 2024–2025, and its free/reduced lunch eligibility was 53% that year. SchoolDigger’s statewide ranking for English Language Learner students was notably higher than the school’s overall ranking: the group was at the 33rd percentile in 2025–2026 versus the school’s 4th. The African American student ranking fell from the 41st percentile in 2023–2024 to the 7th in 2025–2026, while the overall ranking moved from the 14th to the 4th percentile.

I was on the original faculty in 1958. I taught general science and coached freshman football and wrestling. I think it was a very good school with a great student body. We returned in 1991 for a family funeral and visited with some of the faculty at the school. I was impressed with the growth of the school in size and reputation -- impressions re-enforced while visiting with the Assistant Principal of Oak Park River Forest HS in October 2010. This is one of the worst educational facilities that I have ever attended. The teachers are one of the best examples that any parent can ask for, but the fact that the students and the school board only care about the "reputation" (if we have one) that they are willing to spend unnecessary amount of money on trash cans instead of supplies. The violence of this school is more of a cruel joke of a prison. Close Quote
