Summary

J M Hannum Elementary School in Oak Lawn, Illinois, serves kindergarten through grade 5 and enrolls 410 students. Its 2025–26 results show a sharp divide by grade: grades 3 and 4 performed well, while grade 5 was a major concern. In grade 5, 19% were proficient in math, compared with 32% in the district and 36% statewide; science proficiency was 36%, also below the district’s 52% and the state’s 48%. Grade 5 is the school’s clearest academic weakness, especially in math and science.

The school’s strongest results are in grades 3 and 4, where ELA and math proficiency exceeded district and state results. For example, grade 3 proficiency was 71% in ELA and 64% in math; grade 4 results were 73% and 59%, respectively. Across all grades, Hannum was above the state in ELA (61% versus 56%) and math (46% versus 40%), but below Oak Lawn-Hometown School District 123 in ELA and slightly above it in math. Compared with seven nearby K–5 schools, Hannum was second-lowest in both all-grade subjects; nearby averages were 65% in ELA and 49% in math. Attendance is a bright spot: chronic absenteeism was 10%, below the district’s 14% and the state’s 24%, and lower than at all but two nearby schools.

Scores have improved substantially since 2023–24: ELA rose from 38% to 61%, and math from 29% to 46%, moving Hannum above state results in both subjects. Still, its SchoolDigger standing was middling: 811th of 1,737 schools, at the 53rd percentile and rated three stars in 2025–26, down from the 61st percentile in 2023–24. SchoolDigger’s statewide measure showed stronger relative standing for Hispanic Students, at the 81st percentile compared with 53rd overall. White Students’ percentile fell from 66 in 2023–24 to 37 in 2025–26. For context, the 2024–25 student-teacher ratio was 13.4, compared with a nearby-school average of 12.2, and 52% of students were free/reduced lunch eligible.
