Summary

Harvard Junior High School is a public middle school serving grades 6-8 in Harvard, Illinois, with a total enrollment of 577 students. The school is part of the Harvard CUSD 50 district, which is ranked 778 out of 811 districts in Illinois and has a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Harvard Junior High School consistently ranks in the bottom quarter of Illinois middle schools, with academic performance significantly below state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, only 33.5% of students were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to the state average of 53.1%, and just 9.2% were proficient in Math, compared to 38.5% statewide. The school also struggles to effectively serve its diverse student population, with particularly low rankings for subgroups like Hispanic students, English Language Learners, and students with disabilities.

Interestingly, nearby middle schools such as Belvidere Central Middle School, Belvidere South Middle School, and Creekside Middle School generally outperform Harvard Junior High School across academic measures, despite serving student populations with similar socioeconomic characteristics. This suggests that the challenges faced by Harvard Junior High School may not be solely due to the demographics of the student body, but rather point to potential systemic issues within the Harvard CUSD 50 district that have persisted over time.

Open Quote This is a terrible place to be! I am a former teacher at the school and there were countless number of parents who were mortified to find that the students are not getting the help they deserved. This is only part of the problem. Accomodations for students are changed and parents are not notified. They are pulled from and miss out on important classes to drill in areas that will be tested by the state. The principal is a tyrant who runs the school how she sees fit without regard for who it hurts. There is not much hope for the school until she is out! Test scores are low and bullying is up! Stay away if you can help it. Close Quote
