Summary

Big Timber Elementary School serves 451 students in grades K–5 in Hampshire, Illinois. Its 2025–26 math proficiency was above state and district averages, but results differed sharply by grade. The most important caution for parents is that fifth-grade achievement was especially weak: proficiency was 35% in ELA and 15% in math, and both results ranked lowest among nine nearby schools with fifth-grade results.

Compared with state and district benchmarks, math is the school’s strongest subject: 49% of students were proficient, versus 40% statewide and 39% districtwide. ELA proficiency was 55%, close to the state’s 56% and above the district’s 52%. Still, SchoolDigger gives the school a 49th-percentile statewide standing and 2 stars in 2025–26, down from the 56th percentile and 3 stars in 2024–25. Its reported student-teacher ratio was a locally low 11.8:1 in 2024–25. That year, 34% of students were free/reduced lunch eligible, the second-highest rate among nearby schools with the same measure. SchoolDigger’s subgroup rankings also show a notable difference in how well the school serves different groups: Special Education Students ranked at the 20th percentile in 2024–25, 36 points below the school overall, while Low Socio Economic Status Students ranked at the 72nd percentile in 2025–26, 23 points above the overall ranking.
