Summary

Bloom High School serves 1,823 students in grades 9–12 in Chicago Heights. Its results look more favorable against its district and many nearby schools than against Illinois overall: 11th-grade ACT proficiency is well below state rates in every subject, while chronic absenteeism is also high. The most important concern is that 48% of students were chronically absent in 2025–26, compared with 24% statewide.

Bloom is generally just ahead of Bloom Township HSD 206 on test results, but remains far behind the state. On the 11th-grade ACT, Bloom’s proficiency was 24% in ELA, 18% in math and 25% in science—26, 22 and 23 percentage points below Illinois, respectively. Bloom was slightly above its district in all three subjects and ranked fourth of seven nearby schools in each. Graduation is a brighter result: Bloom’s 91% rate was about 1 point above the state and 2 points above its district. Within the nearby group, 9th-grade ELA is a relative weakness, while 9th-grade science is more competitive.

Results are changing unevenly: 11th-grade ACT math proficiency rose 3 points in the latest year, while PreACT ELA fell 7 points in 9th grade and 5 points in 10th grade. Chronic absenteeism improved by 8 points from 2021–22, but remains high; graduation rose by 5 points over the same period. SchoolDigger rates Bloom 1 star and places it at the 12th percentile statewide, down from the 19th percentile the previous year. The school’s 18.2 student-teacher ratio is the highest among nearby schools reported, and 82% of students were free/reduced lunch eligible in 2024–25, also the highest among the five nearby schools with that measure. SchoolDigger’s English Language Learner subgroup standing fell from the 66th percentile in 2023–24 to the 19th in 2025–26; its African American student standing was 30th percentile in 2025–26, above the school’s overall 12th percentile.
