Summary

Horizon Science Academy-Belmont is a public charter school in Chicago, Illinois that serves 672 students in grades K-9. The school has a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 97.48% to 99.55% over the past few years. Despite a significant increase in per-student spending, from $11,123 in 2020-2021 to $22,382 in 2023-2024, Horizon Science Academy-Belmont has faced challenges with high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 25.4% to 33.7%, which is significantly higher than the state average of 15-20%.

The school's test scores are generally lower than the state averages, particularly in mathematics. In 2024-2025, only 28% of students were proficient or better in IAR/Mathematics, compared to the state average of 38.5%. However, the school's performance in English Language Arts is closer to the state average, with 50.6% proficient or better in 2024-2025 compared to the state's 53.1%. When compared to nearby schools, Horizon Science Academy-Belmont outperforms CICS - Longwood Campus and Acero Charter Sor Juana Ines de la in both English Language Arts and Mathematics, but lags behind Horizon Science Academy-McKinley Pk and Horizon Sci Academy - Southwest Charter.

The high chronic absenteeism rates at Horizon Science Academy-Belmont may be contributing to the school's relatively lower test scores, as students who are frequently absent may struggle to keep up with the curriculum and fall behind their peers. Additionally, the significant increase in per-student spending has not yet translated to improved academic outcomes, suggesting that the school may need to focus on other factors, such as instructional practices, curriculum, and student engagement, to drive better performance.

Open Quote This school is a complete joke. They care nothing about the children there. The principal, Mr. Kartal, only cares about how the school looks. There is a very high turn over of teachers during the entire school year. There was an incident were my son's 1st grade teacher cornered and threatened him. I made administration aware of this and nothing was done, instead the principal tired to place the blame soley on my child. I have moved him to a better school where the whole child is cared for, this means mentally, physically and spiritually. I will never place my child back here Close Quote
