Summary:

Three middle schools in Cook County School District 130 serve grades 6–8: Veterans Memorial, Nathan Hale and Everett F. Kerr. In 2025–26, their average proficiency was 46% in ELA, 20% in math and 40% in eighth-grade science, compared with state rates of 56%, 40% and 52%. The biggest concern is math: the schools’ average was 20 percentage points below the state rate.

No single school leads in every subject. Kerr led all-grades ELA at 51%, 8 points above the other two schools’ average, while Veterans Memorial had the lowest rate at 43%. In math, Hale led at 21%, just 2 points above the other schools’ average; Veterans Memorial was lowest at 18%. Veterans Memorial was the standout in eighth-grade science, with 48% proficiency—12 points above Hale and Kerr’s average. Kerr was lowest in science at 34%, 8 points below the other schools’ average.

Scores rose at all three schools in every subject from 2024–25 to 2025–26: the schools’ average increased 6 points in ELA, 2 in math and 15 in science, exceeding state gains in each. The science increase was driven especially by Veterans Memorial’s 34-point jump. SchoolDigger’s 2025–26 percentiles were 21st for Kerr, 18th for Veterans Memorial and 15th for Hale, although each school’s reported percentile was lower than in 2023–24. School size and other measures do not point to one consistent performance pattern: Kerr had the lowest student–teacher ratio (10.3) and led ELA, while Veterans Memorial had the highest ratio (11.9) and led science. In 2024–25, free/reduced lunch eligible shares were 82% at Kerr, 78% at Veterans Memorial and 65% at Hale; these are observations, not explanations for results.
