Salt Fork South Elementary School up 138 spots statewide this year
Summary:

Sidell, Illinois, has two schools in Salt Fork Community Unit District 512: Salt Fork South Elementary School, serving PK–5, and Salt Fork Junior High School, serving grades 6–8. They enroll 154 and 202 students, respectively, and reported achievement and attendance results for 2024–2025 and 2025–2026. Both schools have much lower chronic absenteeism than the state: about 12% at each school, compared with 24% statewide in 2025–2026. The most important finding is that the schools’ academic strengths differ by subject, rather than one school leading across the board.

Salt Fork Junior High led all-grades English language arts (ELA) in 2025–2026, with 57% proficient compared with 40% at the elementary school; its result was near the state’s 56%. In math, Salt Fork South Elementary led with 33%, versus 22% at the junior high, though both were below the state’s 40%. The elementary’s fifth-grade science result was a particular bright spot: 70% proficient, 22 percentage points above the state. The junior high’s eighth-grade science result was 36%, 16 points below its grade’s state result. Both schools’ absenteeism rates were also about 12 points below the state rate. Science results are from different grades, so they are not a same-grade school comparison.

Recent changes also point to different patterns: from 2024–2025 to 2025–2026, junior-high ELA rose 3 percentage points and math rose 6, while elementary ELA fell 5 points and math fell 8. SchoolDigger’s rankings moved in opposite directions: the elementary rose from the 31st to the 52nd percentile, earning 3 stars in 2025–2026, while the junior high fell from the 40th to the 32nd percentile and received 2 stars. As context, in 2024–2025, free/reduced lunch eligible students made up 77% of the elementary and 56% of the junior high; the elementary also had a lower student–teacher ratio (9 versus 16.6) and higher per-student spending ($16,618 versus $12,022). These figures describe differences between the schools but do not explain their results.
