Summary:

Morton, Illinois, has six schools spanning elementary through high school: four elementary schools, one junior high and one high school. In 2025–2026, the elementary schools averaged 80% in all-grades ELA and 69% in math, compared with state results of 56% and 40%. The overall picture is strong against the state, but elementary results—especially in math—vary substantially from school to school.

Grundy Elementary School leads the elementary schools, with 86% in all-grades ELA and 80% in math; its leads over the next school are 3 and 6 percentage points. Lettie Brown Elementary School is second in both subjects and leads fourth-grade ELA and math, as well as fifth-grade science at 84%. At the low end, Jefferson Elementary School has 75% in ELA and 55% in math—11 and 25 points below Grundy. Morton Junior High School posts 88% in all-grades ELA and 65% in math, 32 and 26 points above state results. Morton High School is also above the state in all three ACT subjects, with its largest advantage in science: 76% versus 48%.

Elementary averages improved from 2024–2025 to 2025–2026: ELA rose 4 percentage points, math 2 points, and fifth-grade science 15 points. High school trends were mixed: Morton High’s ACT ELA rose 3 points, science fell 1, and math fell 8. SchoolDigger’s statewide percentile rankings rose from 94th to 96th for Grundy and from 90th to 93rd for Lettie Brown, while Jefferson’s fell from 81st to 75th. As context, free/reduced lunch eligible figures for 2024–2025 were 38% at Jefferson and 14% to 17% at the other elementary schools; Grundy’s student-teacher ratio was 19.3, compared with Jefferson’s 16.1. These measures do not sort neatly with test results. Year-to-year scores reflect different student cohorts, not the progress of the same students.
