Summary:
Lockport, Illinois, has eight schools—six elementary schools, one middle school and one high school—serving students from elementary through high school; the latest reported test results are from 2025–2026. Across the six schools with all-grades IAR results, average proficiency was 61% in ELA and 49% in math, compared with state results of 56% and 40%. The most important finding is that those averages hide a wide gap between schools, especially in math.
Kelvin Grove Junior High School led all-grades ELA at 75%, just ahead of William J Butler School at 74%; Butler led math at 74%. At the other end, Fairmont School had the lowest results, 34% in ELA and 23% in math—22 and 16 percentage points below state, respectively. The highest-to-lowest school spread was 41 points in ELA and 51 in math. Grade-level results can tell a different story: Taft Grade School scored 63% in grade 4 math, the highest reported among area schools for that grade, despite a 34% all-grades math result. The high school, Lockport Township High School East, was above state in all three reported 11th-grade ACT subjects and had a 97% graduation rate, compared with 90% statewide.
Across the six IAR schools, average results fell from 2024–2025 to 2025–2026: about 1 point in ELA and 3 points in math, while state results rose by about 3 and 1 points. Some schools bucked that pattern: Butler improved in both subjects, while Taft’s SchoolDigger ranking rose from the 32nd to the 65th percentile over three years; Butler’s rose from the 81st to the 89th. School size and student–teacher ratios do not sort neatly with results: Fairmont’s ratio was 8.8, compared with 15.8 at Butler. For 2024–2025, free/reduced lunch eligible was 46% at Taft and 37% at Kelvin Grove; Fairmont reported all students receive free meals (Community Eligibility) that year, a different measure. All-grades comparisons are less direct because schools serve different grade spans, and Walsh Elementary School has no supplied test scores.
