Summary:
Hoopeston, Illinois, has four schools serving prekindergarten through grade 12: Maple Elementary School (PK–2), John Greer Elementary School (3–5), Hoopeston Area Middle School (6–8), and Hoopeston Area High School (9–12). The clearest academic concern is math: the middle school’s latest all-grades result was 15% proficient, 25 percentage points below the state, while the high school’s 11th-grade ACT math result was 13%, 27 points below the state.
John Greer stands out in the comparable elementary and middle-school results, particularly in math: its all-grades IAR proficiency was 30% in math and 48% in ELA, compared with 15% and 42% at the middle school. Greer’s fourth-graders were a bright spot, scoring 4 points above the state in ELA and 1 point above in math; those results do not represent every grade, as Greer’s third- and fifth-graders scored below state levels in both subjects. The middle school’s all-grades results were below the state in both subjects, as were the high school’s 11th-grade ACT results. The high school’s ACT math gap was its largest, while its ELA result was closer to the state. Maple has no reported test scores.
Recent results show mixed direction: middle-school IAR scores improved, with its state gaps narrowing by about 2 points in both ELA and math, while Greer’s gaps widened by 9 points in ELA and 4 in math. At the high school, 11th-grade ACT ELA proficiency rose by 8 points, but math fell by 3. Attendance also differs sharply: chronic absenteeism was 13% at Greer and 19% at Maple, versus 34% at the middle school and 32% at the high school. As context, free/reduced lunch eligible shares in 2024–25 were 64% at Greer and 55% at the middle school. SchoolDigger ranks the district 679th of 738, in the 8th percentile, with zero stars; these are SchoolDigger ratings, not state ratings.
