Sugar-Salem Junior High School

Sugar-Salem Junior High School serves 370 students in grades 6–8 in Sugar City, Idaho, and is part of the Sugar-Salem Joint District. The school was once one of Idaho's top-performing middle schools, ranking 18th of 171 schools statewide in 2011–2012 with a 5-star rating. However, its standing has fallen dramatically: by 2025–2026, it ranked 138th of 174 schools, placing it in the bottom quarter of the state. This represents a steep decline from a school that previously performed in the top 10–15% of Idaho middle schools.

Academically, Sugar-Salem Junior High School now trails both state averages and many nearby schools. In the most recent testing year, math proficiency was 39.3% (compared to the state average of 43.1%), and English Language Arts proficiency was 39.4% (compared to the state average of 54.0%). Science proficiency is a particularly urgent concern: only 16.5% of students were proficient in 2024–2025, down from 33.6% just two years earlier and far below the state average of 42.6%. By comparison, Rigby Middle School achieved 52.7% science proficiency, and Farnsworth Middle School reached 43.4%. Sugar-Salem Junior High School also trails its own district in every subject, and 8th grade ELA proficiency sits at just 29.8%, well below the state's 54.5%.

The school does have genuine strengths. Chronic absenteeism is just 7.1%, less than half the statewide rate of 14.6%, and its student-teacher ratio of 15.2 is the lowest among nearby middle schools. Sugar-Salem Junior High School also spends more per student ($7,531) than several better-performing neighbors, including Rigby Middle School ($6,249). These advantages make the academic struggles harder to explain and suggest that curriculum, instruction, or school programming—not resources or attendance—are the key areas needing attention.
