Burton Elementary School

Summary:

Burton Elementary School is a public elementary school located in Rexburg, Idaho, serving grades PK-4 with a student population of 646. It is part of the Madison School District, which is ranked 34 out of 56 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Burton Elementary consistently performs above the state and district averages in both Math and English Language Arts (ELA) proficiency across all grades. In 2022-2023, 48.6% of students were proficient or better in Math, compared to 41.5% statewide and 38.3% in the Madison District. However, the school's performance has been declining, with its ranking dropping from the top 25 Idaho elementary schools to 141 out of 252 in 2022-2023. This is in contrast to the generally strong academic performance of the school compared to the state and district averages.

Burton Elementary has a relatively homogeneous student population, with 86.84% of students identifying as White in the 2022-2023 school year, which is higher than the racial diversity of the surrounding Madison District schools. The school also has a higher chronic absenteeism rate of 21.7% compared to the state and district averages of 18.5%. However, it has a lower percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch (31.42% in 2022-2023), suggesting a relatively higher socioeconomic status of the student population compared to the surrounding schools, such as Lincoln Elementary and Kennedy Elementary, which also perform well academically and have lower chronic absenteeism rates.

Open Quote LOVED Burton for my kiddo. The teachers genuinely care for the kids and their education. My son's teacher helped him excel even as a kindergartner. He went into kindergarten reading at a first grade level and he came out and the end of the year reading at a third grade level. We LOVE BURTON!! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
