Summary

Bonneville High School is a traditional public high school in Idaho Falls, ID, serving 1,176 students in grades 9–12 as part of the Bonneville Joint District. The school's most defining feature is a dramatic two-year decline in performance. From roughly 2020 through 2023, Bonneville consistently earned 3-star rankings and sat comfortably in the 56th to 69th percentile statewide. However, the most recent two years show a sharp drop to the 13th percentile and a 1-star rating — a stunning fall for a school that was one of the stronger traditional high schools in its area as recently as 2023–2024.

Academic metrics have declined across the board. In the most recent End-of-Course results, 21.7% of students were proficient in math, 24.3% in science, and 45.0% in English Language Arts — all below state averages. The graduation rate has also slipped from a peak of 92.2% in 2022–2023 to 82.5% in 2024–2025. There are some positive signs, however. Chronic absenteeism has improved dramatically, from over 20% to 13.2%, now better than both district and state averages. The school also serves a growing number of economically disadvantaged students, with free/reduced-price lunch eligibility rising from 22.8% to 30.7% in just two years, which adds context to recent performance challenges.

Compared with nearby schools, Bonneville's decline is especially visible. Hillcrest High School and Idaho Falls Senior High School both currently rank in the 57th percentile with 3 stars, while Thunder Ridge High School ranks in the 20th percentile — all above Bonneville's 13th percentile. Bonneville also trails most of these schools in science and ELA proficiency. Yet the picture is not entirely negative: the school has made meaningful improvement in serving low-income and Hispanic students in recent years, and attendance continues to trend in the right direction. Bonneville has demonstrated it can perform well, but reversing the sharp decline of the last two years will require understanding what changed so dramatically after 2023–2024.
