Summary

Central Canyon Elementary School is a PK-5 school in Caldwell, Idaho, that serves 654 students in the Vallivue School District. The school has experienced a notable decline in its state ranking over the past several years, falling from a 4-star rating in 2021-2022 to a 1-star rating by 2025-2026, when it ranked in the 24th percentile statewide. During this same period, the share of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch rose from about 49.5% to 59.9%, reflecting a significant increase in economic need among the student population.

Academically, Central Canyon's 2025-2026 proficiency rates dropped below district and state averages: 33.7% in math (vs. 34.7% district and 43.1% state) and 42.5% in ELA (vs. 50.3% district and 54.0% state). This marks a sharp decline from 2023-2024, when the school's ELA results exceeded the state average. Despite the overall decline, Central Canyon still ranks above most nearby schools, including Lakevue Elementary School, Willow Creek Elementary, and Skyway Elementary. One standout strength is the school's exceptional outcomes for Hispanic students, who ranked 3rd of 58 schools statewide in 2023-2024. Male students also performed better than female students in state-level comparisons, with boys at the 49th percentile and girls at the 28th percentile.

Chronic absenteeism remains the school's most actionable concern. At 23.3%, Central Canyon's rate is nearly double the state average of 13.8% and higher than every other Vallivue elementary school in its comparison group, though it has improved substantially from a peak of 35% in 2021-2022. A comparison with Desert Springs Elementary School is especially telling: both schools share the same district and similar poverty levels, but Desert Springs has a much lower absenteeism rate (15.9%) and notably higher proficiency (40.2% math and 52.8% ELA). The differences suggest that attendance and school-level factors, rather than funding or district policy, may be driving the gap. Lowering chronic absenteeism further could be the single most important lever for helping Central Canyon reverse its recent decline, especially since the school has already demonstrated it can achieve exceptional results for specific student groups.

Open Quote I have loved our boys' teachers and the administration at Central Canyon Elementary. I'd like to give you two examples of why this school has been above average in my mind.
Last year my youngest was really struggling. He hated school because he felt unsuccessful. Not only did his teacher keep us posted about his academic struggles (he was testing at the bottom of the class), but she arranged additional meetings with us and spent small group time with him and a few other classmates during lunch in a "reading club". He is now reading above his grade level, but more than that, he LIKES to read! (A huge change.)
Secondly, my sons have each had experiences with bullying. Bullying is not tolerated at Central Canyon and we were very pleased with how promptly and thoroughly the administration dealt with the children who picked on our kids and supported our boys.
They really care at Central and it shows. Close Quote
