Summary

Valley Point Middle School in Dalton, GA, serves 377 students in grades 6-8 as part of Whitfield County Schools, and it has seen its statewide ranking slip from a 4-star rating (74th percentile) in 2022-2023 to a 2-star rating (44th percentile) in 2025-2026.

This decline comes alongside a rapid shift in the student population: the share of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch jumped from about 75% to 98% in just two years, which often brings additional challenges. Compared to nearby schools, Westside Middle School (8 miles away) maintains a 4-star rating with 66% proficiency in 8th grade math, while North Whitfield Middle School holds a 3-star rating despite serving a similar population.

There are some bright spots. Valley Point ranks in the 62nd percentile statewide for English Language Learner students—a clear strength—and chronic absenteeism has improved from 22.7% to 14.2%, now better than the state average. Science scores remain close to the state average, and the school maintains a favorable 11.7:1 student-teacher ratio. However, the school spends $15,553 per student, which is higher than Westside ($13,083), North Whitfield ($13,177), and New Hope Middle School ($14,222), yet those schools achieve better results. This raises questions about how resources are being used. For parents, the picture is mixed: the school shows real strengths in supporting ELL students and improving attendance, but it faces significant challenges in math, social studies, and 7th grade ELA that will require focused attention in the coming year.

This school does not do a good job at all readying the students for future success. These students are not driven to excel (hence, the performance tests). The teacher's do not push the students, rarely any homework given and very few tests or quizzes.

It seems the mentality of the teachers is basically letting the students slide by with minimal results and have this "we don't want to discourage the student" ideology. Basically, they base the majority of grades through simple participation.

I've never seen such a lax teaching environment in all of my life. I would not recommend this school to any parent that wants their child to endure a successful life. Close Quote
