Summary

Garrett Elementary School in Augusta, GA, serves 435 students in Pre-K through 5th grade and is part of the Richmond County School District, where 100% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

Garrett faces significant academic challenges, with overall proficiency rates well below state averages. However, there are a few relative bright spots worth noting. In 5th-grade science, 10.9% of students met proficiency standards—a modest figure, but one that outpaces several nearby schools like Wilkinson Gardens Elementary School (8.5%), Jenkins-White Elementary School (4.6%), and Bayvale Elementary School (2.6%). Similarly, 3rd-grade math proficiency (23.9%) is nearly on par with the district average (24.6%) and beats several peers, including Copeland Elementary School (15.1%) and Warren Road Elementary School (16.3%). Attendance is also a relative strength: Garrett's chronic absenteeism rate of 26.9% is high, but it's notably lower than at Wilkinson Gardens (41.6%), Jenkins-White (39.1%), Bayvale (37.2%), and Monte Sano Elementary School (35.0%).

The contrast with nearby districts is stark. Just 4.8 miles away, Stevens Creek Elementary School in the Columbia County School District posts proficiency rates of 70–80% or higher. Yet within Garrett's own district, Walker Traditional Elementary School achieves an 85th percentile ranking with a chronic absenteeism rate of just 6.0%, despite serving a similarly high-poverty population. This shows that strong school culture and instructional models can make a difference. Garrett's state ranking improved from the 15th percentile in 2018-2019 to the 27th percentile in 2022-2023, though it has since slipped to the 4th percentile—a decline seen across many Richmond County schools. Notably, Garrett spends $17,495 per student, more than both Walker Traditional ($13,080) and Stevens Creek ($12,495), suggesting the challenge lies in how resources are used to overcome the barriers of high poverty.

Open Quote This school isoutragous!!! The 5th grade social studies teacher told my daughter's father that all "12 year old little girls are bitches", and she is a bully who loves to pick on certain students. The so called counilsor, apparently received her degree out of a big box of cereal, and the principal there are no words!!! I am currently awaiting information from Atlanta, as to what my next move should be concerningthis really messed up school.
I plan on removing my kid within 2weeks Close Quote
