Summary

EXCEL Academy is a small alternative school in McDonough, GA, serving 213 students in grades 6 through 12 within the Henry County school district.

EXCEL Academy serves a high-need population—about two-thirds of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch—and its mission is different from traditional high schools. It offers a much smaller student-to-teacher ratio (8.9:1) and spends significantly more per student ($19,688) than nearby schools, reflecting its intensive, small-group approach. However, academic outcomes remain very low. In the most recent testing, only 11.3% of students were proficient in Algebra I and Biology, compared to state averages of 48.1% and 47.2%, respectively. The graduation rate is 51.5%, far below the district's 89.8% and the state's 87.2%, and the dropout rate of 14.6% is more than six times the state average. Chronic absenteeism, while improved from 57% two years ago, still affects one in three students.

There are modest signs of progress: the school's state ranking improved from the 2nd to the 7th percentile, and graduation rates have climbed from a low of 15.4% a few years ago. Still, the school lags behind every nearby traditional high school, such as Woodland High School and Ola High School, which post graduation rates above 90%. A particularly useful comparison is Impact Academy High School, located just down the road. Both are alternative schools, yet Impact Academy has a chronic absenteeism rate of just 9.0% and double the proficiency rates in Algebra I and Biology. This suggests that alternative education can achieve better results, and EXCEL Academy may have lessons to learn from its neighbor. Note that Georgia's current test release does not include English Language Arts scores; those will be available in December.
