Summary

Stripling Elementary School in Norcross, GA, serves approximately 799 students in grades PK-5 as part of Gwinnett County Public Schools, a district ranked in the 67th percentile statewide. The school has faced significant challenges over the past decade, dropping from the 46th percentile in 2016-2017 to the 21st percentile today, though this represents a meaningful recovery from a low point of the 7th percentile in 2023-2024. With 86.1% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, Stripling serves a predominantly low-income population and invests heavily in its students, spending $16,416 per pupil—more than nearby Beaver Ridge Elementary School ($15,384) and Peachtree Elementary School ($15,985)—while maintaining a favorable student-teacher ratio of 11.3:1.

Academically, Stripling shows a mixed picture with encouraging momentum. Current math proficiency rates (26.8% in 3rd grade, 23.3% in 4th grade, 26.7% in 5th grade) are roughly half the district averages, but the school posted substantial year-over-year gains, including an 87% relative improvement in 5th grade math (from 14.3% to 26.7%). Science is a notable strength: 5th grade proficiency jumped from 19.7% to 34.2%, narrowing the gap with the state average to just 10 percentage points—far smaller than the 17-27 point gaps seen in math. This science outperformance is unusual and may point to effective instructional strategies worth replicating. The school also made dramatic progress on chronic absenteeism, cutting the rate from 29.4% in 2023-2024 to 18.4% this year, closing the gap with the district from 9.5 to just 3.4 percentage points.

Compared to nearby schools, Stripling outperforms Graves Elementary School (13th percentile) but trails Beaver Ridge (39th percentile) and Peachtree (49th percentile), which sits just 1.36 miles away and achieves nearly double the math proficiency while serving a somewhat less economically disadvantaged population. The two charter schools within two miles—International Charter Academy of Georgia and Brookhaven Innovation Academy—post proficiency rates 20-40 points higher, but serve far fewer low-income families, making direct comparisons difficult. Overall, Stripling appears to be on a positive trajectory, with recent gains in math, science, and attendance suggesting that targeted interventions may be taking hold. The coming years will determine whether this represents a sustainable trend or a temporary rebound.

Open Quote There are some amazing teachers at Stripling that really care about the students. Dr. Bryson is a wonderful 5th grade teacher, and she challenges her students to go beyond the basics. My son was an average student, and through her leadership, he has finally started reaching his full potential, because she motivates and excites him as a learner. Rankings and Ratings don't always capture those extraordinary teachers who go above and beyond. Close Quote
