Summary

Brookhaven Innovation Academy is a K-8 charter school in Norcross, GA, serving 524 students under the State Specialty Schools II- Brookhaven Innovation Academy district, and it currently ranks in the 68th percentile of Georgia schools with a 3-star rating.

This school stands out most for its exceptional math and science results. An extraordinary 91.3% of students taking the Algebra I End of Course exam scored proficient or better—nearly double the state average of 48.1%—and 90% of 8th graders scored proficient in High School Physical Science, compared to 60.9% statewide. Middle school math is also a clear strength, with 7th grade proficiency at 76.2% versus 42% statewide. The school also keeps chronic absenteeism low at 11%, well below the state average of 17.7%. However, 8th grade Social Studies is a notable weak spot, with only 24.5% proficiency versus 40.2% statewide, suggesting the school's focus is heavily STEM-oriented. The school also earns a 5-star rating for its work with African American students, ranking in the 90th percentile statewide.

Compared to nearby schools, the differences are stark. Stripling Elementary School and Norcross Elementary School, both within a mile, rank in the bottom quartile of Georgia schools and have math proficiency rates in the low-to-mid 20s—roughly half of Brookhaven's rates. Those schools also serve far more economically disadvantaged populations (86–89% free/reduced lunch) compared to Brookhaven's 25.76%. Interestingly, Brookhaven achieves these results while spending less per student ($13,974) than many nearby schools, including Graves Elementary School ($14,853) and Beaver Ridge Elementary School ($15,384). The school's steady climb from the 53rd percentile in 2020-2021 to its current position suggests a successful, efficient STEM-focused model worth considering for families prioritizing advanced math and science preparation.

Open Quote If you like having your kids get bullied with no support from administrators, then this is the school for you. I only experienced the lower school, but it was atrocious. Close Quote

Open Quote Great concept but horrible management. Lots of teachers and staff keep leaving which is sad... Lots of false promises... Class sizes are not as small as we were told. Personalized learning is non existent. Projects based learning are a joke. Do your research before you send your kids here because although it sounds great it is definitely not!! Close Quote

Open Quote Mixed experiences here. It depends on what teacher your child gets (a lot of teachers filter in and out). If your child does not need anything and does fine on their own (can teach themselves, no social or emotional needs) then your child is just what this school is looking for. If you love doing fundraising, and need to pay to promote your business you will also find many opportunities to do that at this school. If you are seeking something different, perhaps look for another school. Close Quote

Open Quote I would not recommend this school because BIA does not care about its students and, as such, its discipline actions are very bad. When I was in 7th grade in BIA the whole of 6th to 8th grade was punished by getting no recess for us students laughing. What had happened was there were these two kids that were popping plastic bags in the cafeteria during lunch. The teachers told us to stop laughing, assuming that it wasn't funny (it was like a stand-up comedian saying to his/her audience "Stop laughing"). The teachers punished the whole middle school for laughing. They took our recess away, which is darn wrong because that's most of the students' only way of exercise everyday. Furthermore, some kids weren't even at the cafeteria and were still punished (they were part of the Student Council and were in a meeting elsewhere during lunch). Oh, and by the way, us students only get PE once every three weeks! We need our exercise, but the school doesn't even care, as long as it's convenient for their schedule. Please do not send your kids to BIA, for the sake of the students. Thank you. Close Quote

Open Quote BIA is getting better all the time. We love it, and our daughter loves it, and the other daughter will start next year. The new campus just opened this year and is great! The teachers are awesome, the students are great, and the the new facilities are super. It's getting better all the time and we're excited for all the changes taking place! Close Quote
