Sandy Springs Middle School in Atlanta, GA, serves 763 students in grades 6-8 as part of the Fulton County school district, and currently holds a 2-star rating (44th percentile statewide) for the 2025-2026 school year.

This school is truly a story of extremes. On one hand, its advanced coursework results are nothing short of remarkable: 95.9% of students taking Algebra I scored proficient or better—nearly double the district average and more than double the state average. This performance actually rivals or exceeds top-ranked nearby schools like Autrey Mill Middle School (98.9%) and Crabapple Middle School (92.4%). Similarly, 89.2% of 8th graders taking high school Physical Science scored proficient, well above the state average. On the other hand, standard grade-level math tells a very different story: only 28.9% of 6th graders, 32% of 7th graders, and 36.1% of 8th graders scored proficient—roughly 20 points below district averages and 8-10 points below state averages. This gap is especially stark when compared to Autrey Mill, where 82-84% of students in grades 6-8 meet math proficiency. Science (26.4%) and social studies (28.1%) proficiency also trail district averages significantly.

There are some encouraging signs. Chronic absenteeism has dropped from 25.7% to 17.8% over four years, now essentially at the state average. The school also spends generously at $18,023 per student—more than several higher-performing neighbors—and maintains a favorable 12.3:1 student-teacher ratio. However, the school's overall ranking has declined from the 61st percentile in 2018-2019 to 44th today, and it now sits 97 positions behind the lowest-ranked nearby school, Holcomb Bridge Middle School. The school's success with advanced students and its challenges with standard-track learners suggest that targeted support for students in regular math classes—and for specific student groups—could help reverse the downward trend. We are new to SSCMS this year with a sixth grader and are completely thrilled with our child's experience so far. The teachers in his core classes (math/ELA/science/social studies are top notch, with rigorous STEAM Academy and TAG level classes. My son is about to finish his 7th grade year at SSCMS and we have only had positive experiences. He is 13 years old and ADHD. We tried the private school route (GHA, Galloway)... but honestly they (unlike Public Schools) are not mandated to know how to teach a student with my son's challenges. He is very bright and came to SSCMS in the 6th grade and went right into advanced classes. We have a 504 plan for him and I regularly speak, text and email with his teachers when necessary. He is challenged by the curriculum and has a great, diverse social life. The first year I wasn't very involved... but this year I was able to take on more volunteer roles and spend time getting to know the admin. They are a dedicated group of educators who are working on building SSCMS into a top level, superior school for our community. I would suggest to anyone interested... before you decide on a private school, or consider moving to another county... just walk through the doors of Sandy Springs Charter Middle School and see and hear what all the great buzz is about! I've got a rising 8th grader, as well as a child at North Springs High School - i have no doubt this is where they needed to be and are more than prepared for the next step. This middle school had my rising Jr. well-prepared for the honor/AP classes he's taking.

The new principal wants his kids to succeed! He has a great staff and has created a whole new energy at the school that is evident as soon as you walk thru the front doors. He is working hard to engage the parents and the local communities to get involved. He's created an open door, approachable environment that makes you want to come to school and learn! Close Quote
