Wadsworth Magnet School for High Achievers in Decatur, GA, is a specialized magnet school serving 273 students in grades 4 through 8 within the DeKalb County school district.

This school has earned the #1 ranking out of 578 Georgia middle schools for three consecutive years, placing it in the 100th percentile with a 5-star rating. The most recent testing shows near-perfect proficiency across all subjects: math proficiency ranges from 94.7% to 100% across grades 4-8, science sits at 97.4% (5th grade) and 98.1% (8th grade), and social studies and Algebra I both hit 100%. To put this in perspective, while only 25.4% of DeKalb County 6th graders and 40.7% of Georgia 6th graders are proficient in math, Wadsworth achieves 100% proficiency. The school also ranks #1 in the state for female, male, and African American students, showing excellence across all student groups. Notably, 61% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch—a much higher percentage than at comparably high-performing schools like Beacon Hill Middle School (15%) or Atlanta Neighborhood Charter - Middle (15%)—yet Wadsworth still outperforms these schools by 15-60 percentage points in every subject.

Nearby middle schools like Freedom Middle School, Miller Grove Middle School, and Mary McLeod Bethune Middle School report chronic absenteeism rates between 23-42%. The school achieves these results while spending less per student ($17,904) than many peers, including Columbia Middle School ($22,381) and Chapel Hill Middle School ($21,186). Wadsworth's sustained excellence—improving from 84.4-100% proficiency in 2023-2024 to 94.7-100% in 2025-2026—demonstrates a continuous improvement culture that delivers exceptional results for families seeking rigorous academic preparation.

Open Quote Wadsworth is a terrible school! My son appeared with multiple scar marks, one directly visible to his jaw to his chin. No one was contacted, no one was called, no one was notified. This shows you what kind of school Wadsworth is. It's a school built for test scores, not for human life. Concerned parents, please do not send your gifted and talented sons and daughters to this school. I promise you they will be injured Close Quote

Open Quote Wadsworth Magnet School is an excellent school. The staff really cares about the students. They really push the students to the limit and require them work hard. My daughter has been in private, Christian schools from kindergarden to the 5th grade. This is her first year at a public school. It is a big adjustment for her but she is adjusting well with the help of the great staff at Wadsworth. Close Quote

Open Quote Wadsworth is by far dekalbs best kept secret. If I had my way they would have let it go to 8th grade and my daughter would still be there. The learning enviroment is truly awesome and we truly miss our daughter being there and she misses it to. Close Quote

Open Quote Wadsworth is an excellent school! My son transferred there from a private school, and I could not have asked for a better transition. The administration has high standards for the students both academically and behaviorally, and the students are eager to rise to the expected levels of performance. The work is challenging, which is to be expected from a magnet program, and the teachers are always happy to assist the students as needed. The students are friendly, and are always helpful to each other when needed. Close Quote
