Summary

McNair High School is a public high school in Atlanta, GA, serving 779 students in grades 9-12 within the DeKalb County School District, where all students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

McNair is showing real signs of momentum, even though it still faces significant challenges. The most striking story is the graduation rate, which has jumped from 55.2% in 2022-2023 to 77.3% in 2024-2025—a nearly 20-point improvement in just two years. That puts McNair close to nearby Columbia High School (80.4%) and Cedar Grove High School (82.7%). Academically, the school is also improving across the board. Algebra I proficiency has climbed from just 4.2% in 2023-2024 to 22.9% in 2025-2026, and Biology proficiency (27.8%) now beats several nearby Atlanta schools, including Carver High School (14.6%) and South Atlanta High School (25.6%). One standout area is special education, where McNair's students rank in the 50th percentile statewide—the school's highest-rated subgroup.

However, chronic absenteeism remains a major hurdle. At 46.9%, it's nearly triple the state average (17.7%) and well above the district rate (26.7%), though it has improved from a peak of 61% in 2023-2024. U.S. History proficiency (18.4%) is also a persistent weak spot, less than half the state average. The school spends $20,470 per student, up 39% over three years, but that's still far less than the $29,100 spent at Charles Drew Charter Ja/Senior Academy, a nearby school with a 98.2% graduation rate and dramatically higher test scores. McNair's overall state ranking (18th percentile) remains low, but the broad-based improvements in 2025-2026 suggest recent investments in interventions may finally be taking hold.

Open Quote This school lacks what most schools have. The teachers and students have to work harder than most of the average schools in the county. Therefore, the school have a high transition turnover rate of teachers. The parents who want the best for their children’s education will seek other schools. The school lacks great experience leaders who can make a change. This school use to be one of the best schools in the county (academic/sports, etc.) and now it is one of the worst schools that has not changed in years. If you expect a school with a grade less than a seventy (70) to provide top education, then you are expecting a top failing education for the children. I was a disappointed parent who was expecting change for the best education for my child. Close Quote
