Summary

Cross Keys High School in Brookhaven, GA, serves approximately 1,748 students in grades 9-12 as part of the DeKalb County School District, and it has been on a steady upward climb in recent years.

One of the most impressive stories at Cross Keys is its work with English Language Learners (ELL). The school ranks in the 94th percentile statewide for this group of students—a 5-star rating that places it 10th out of 173 schools in Georgia. This is a remarkable strength, especially when you consider that nearby Clarkston High School, which serves a similar student population, doesn't show comparable results. The school has also improved its overall statewide ranking dramatically, moving from the 23rd percentile in 2021-2022 to the 48th percentile in 2025-2026—a jump that now puts it ahead of Lakeside High School in the latest rankings. Graduation rates have climbed from 56.9% to 73.7% over three years, and the school now exceeds the district average in U.S. History proficiency. Biology has been a consistent bright spot, with proficiency rates hovering near or above the district average for several years running.

That said, challenges remain. Chronic absenteeism sits at 43.6%, which is roughly 2.5 times the state average and far higher than nearby schools like Chamblee High School (15.0%) or Decatur High School (16.2%). The dropout rate of 8.3% is also higher than the state average, though it has improved from 11.1% a few years ago. The school spends $19,060 per student—more than some neighboring schools but less than others—and its improvement trajectory suggests those resources are being used effectively. For parents, the picture is one of a school that has made real, measurable progress, particularly for ELL students, while still working to tackle attendance and engagement issues that affect long-term success.

Open Quote Cross Keys is the Rodney Dangerfield of public schools - no respect. This amazing school is made up of of mostly first generation Americans. Hardworking students and a dedicated, quality faculty manage to keep this school's academic results near the top in DeKalb County (Georgia's 3rd largest system) each year. With Free and Reduced Lunch rates in the mid- to high- eighties, and English as a second language students making up a large majority of the student body the school is home to low income and high achievement.

Cross Keys HS offers traditional college prep instruction and students can also participate in unique career "pathways" in Health Sciences (prep and test for State Certified CNA), certified dental assistant instruction, information technology, auto tech, engineering and manufacturing. The Health Sciences program produced 13 CNAs in academic year 2013. The manufacturing program produced the 2012 DeKalb County Champion VEX Robotics team that also placed in the 1st percentile worldwide in Anahiem, CA at VEX World competing against the best 400 teams from the U.S., China, Great Britain, and dozens of other countries. It is also home to the history-making Solar Car Team, Endeavour, that was the first in Georgia history to compete in the Winston Solar Challenge which is called one of the most complex S.T.E.M. projects in North America.

The school has been recognized as a Georgia "School of Excellence" for overall achievement and as a "Title I School of Distinction" for its high participation and high pass rates in Advanced Placement courses and testing.

The students and faculty accomplish these things in spite of being in a highly gerrymandered attendance area that spans four municipalities along a narrow stretch of Buford Hwy. While this tortured footprint denies the school a natural and cohesive "community of interest," the students create their own unique community in this highly diverse and elongated attendance area. Many communities struggle to create schools with an "international climate" while Cross Keys has become one organically. It is a priceless environment that produces very well-rounded scholars ready for college and the modern workplace. Close Quote
