Summary

Smyrna Elementary School in Smyrna, GA, serves approximately 870 students in grades PK-5 within the Cobb County School District, a district ranked in the 71st percentile statewide.

This school has shown remarkable, steady improvement over the past decade, climbing from the 26th percentile in 2015-2016 to the 63rd percentile in 2025-2026—a gain of 37 percentile points that has lifted its star rating from 1 to 3 stars. The school is particularly strong in early grades: 3rd grade math proficiency reached 52.8% in 2025-2026, nearly matching the district average and exceeding the state average, with a 9-point jump from the prior year. Smyrna also stands out for its dramatic reduction in chronic absenteeism, which dropped from 23.1% in 2021-2022 to 13.4% in 2025-2026—now below both district and state averages. The school achieves these results with relatively modest resources ($17,317 per student) compared to several lower-performing nearby schools, including Norton Park Elementary School ($20,973) and LaBelle Elementary School ($24,614), suggesting efficient use of funding.

While Smyrna's overall trajectory is positive, there are areas to watch. The school shows a pattern of declining math performance as students advance: 3rd grade proficiency was 52.8%, 4th grade 53.4%, but 5th grade fell to 42.5%—a gap that has persisted across multiple years. Science performance in 5th grade, while improving significantly from 30.1% to 44.7% over two years, still trails the district average by 2.4 points. Among nearby schools, Smyrna outperforms several with similar or higher poverty levels, including Argyle Elementary School (39th percentile) and Green Acres Elementary School (23rd percentile), but trails King Springs Elementary School (84th percentile), which serves a more affluent population. Interestingly, Smyrna has essentially swapped positions with Teasley Elementary School, which declined from the 76th to 61st percentile while Smyrna rose to 63rd. English Language Learner students (35th percentile) represent an area for continued focus, but the school's overall upward trend suggests effective leadership and instructional improvements that have taken root over time.

Open Quote I worked in Smyrna as a substitute and had a grandson at the school. I have a PhD in Educational Policy Studies and a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction and worked as a certified classroom observer for several years. It is insightful that of the 4 times I've left teacher feedback during my 2 years of subbing in APS and Cobb County Schools, 3 of them have been negative comments at Smyrna. These negative reviews were not the result of student behavior but because of what I observed from co-teachers in the classroom. As a grandparent, teachers and staff were not responsive to the needs of my grandson and daughter to be removed from the DLI program. It is known when students struggle academically they can easily become behavior problems. The principal refused to meet with my daughter despite several requests. In 40 years as a parent and educator, I've never heard of such. I'm sure there are a lot of good, dedicated teachers at Smyrna as at any school, but in my encounters, staff, administration, and teachers have been questionable in their professionalism. It is little wonder this school with the beautiful new edifice ranks as low as it does with declining test scores. Close Quote

Open Quote My daughter attends Smyrna Elementary School. This school is very impressive with the professionalism and dedication to the student's Success. Mr. Ward the Principal truly cares for this staff and students. We are so luck to have him. The School works hard to assist the community. The students work hard to learn all aspects of bettering themselves as well. Close Quote
