Summary

Groves High School in Garden City, GA, serves about 1,469 students in grades 9-12 as part of the Savannah-Chatham County school district. The school currently holds a 1-star rating and ranks in the bottom 15% of Georgia high schools, with roughly three-quarters of its students qualifying for free or reduced lunch.

The most encouraging news is a dramatic drop in chronic absenteeism—from 59.1% last year to 33.7% this year. While that rate is still about double the state average (17.7%), the 25-point improvement suggests real progress in getting students to class. Another bright spot is Biology: 34.2% of students scored proficient on the End of Course test this year, more than triple the Algebra I rate (10.3%) and a big jump from last year’s 16.9%. That Biology score actually beats Beach High School (18.8%) and nearly matches Jenkins High School (35.2%), even though Groves ranks lower overall. However, Algebra I proficiency remains very low, and U.S. History dipped from 27.6% to 20%.

The graduation rate sits at 77.1%, about 10 points below the state average, and has bounced around (72.9%–80.4%) over the past five years. The student-teacher ratio has also climbed to 19.7—the highest among comparable district high schools, including Johnson High School (11.6) and The School of Liberal Studies at Savannah High (10.5). Per-student spending has risen to $14,705, but test scores haven’t yet followed. A nearby comparison is telling: Woodville-Tompkins Technical and Career High School, just 1.25 miles away, serves a similar student population yet ranks 9th in the state with a 100% graduation rate. Groves is clearly in transition—attendance and Biology are improving, but sustained gains in math, history, and graduation will be key in the years ahead.
