Summary:

Laurens County is home to eight public schools—four elementary, two middle, and two high schools—serving roughly 6,300 students in a predominantly rural Georgia community where all schools report high economic need, with free/reduced lunch rates ranging from 70% to 100%.

The district's standout performers are on the west side. West Laurens Middle School ranks in the 90th percentile statewide, with a remarkable 100% of students scoring proficient or above in Algebra I—more than double the state average. Northwest Laurens Elementary has earned 4-star ratings for three straight years, posting the district's lowest chronic absenteeism rate (9.5%) and math proficiency rates nearly 30 points above state averages. West Laurens High School has improved its ranking for three consecutive years, now sitting in the 84th percentile with a 92.1% graduation rate and a dropout rate half the state average. By contrast, the east-side schools lag significantly. East Laurens High School ranks in only the 42nd percentile, with the district's lowest test scores and highest chronic absenteeism (28.9%), yet still posts a 94% graduation rate—the highest in the district. East Laurens Middle School sits in the 57th percentile, a 33-percentile gap behind its west-side counterpart.

District-wide, Laurens County outperforms state averages in nearly every subject, including an 8th grade science proficiency rate of 50.8% versus 29.7% statewide. However, spending does not predict success: East Laurens Primary School spends the most per student ($16,139) while West Laurens High School spends the least ($12,324) yet outperforms its east-side counterpart. Chronic absenteeism strongly correlates with performance, suggesting attendance interventions could be a high-leverage strategy. East Laurens Elementary shows promise, climbing from the 57th to 71st percentile with a low 10.6% absenteeism rate, while Southwest Laurens Elementary sits in the middle of the pack. For parents, the west-side schools offer the strongest academic track record, while east-side schools present opportunities for growth.
