Summary

Freedom Elementary School in Deland, FL, is a mid-sized elementary school serving 786 students from Pre-K through 5th grade, part of the Volusia school district, and offers a stable, reliable educational option in an area with widely varying school performance.

Freedom Elementary stands out for its consistent strength in Mathematics, where it outperforms both district and state averages across all grade levels. This is a notable differentiator from nearby schools like Timbercrest Elementary School, which has higher math scores in some grades but falls below the district average in 5th grade. However, the school shows a clear disparity between subjects: while math is a core strength, English Language Arts (ELA) scores have persistently matched or fallen below district and state averages, suggesting a need for targeted support in reading and writing. The school also boasts a chronic absenteeism rate of 24.6%, which is dramatically lower than many neighbors such as Blue Lake Elementary School (37.7%) and Edith I. Starke Elementary School (39.9%), indicating a more engaged student body and effective attendance initiatives.

Financially, Freedom Elementary is highly efficient, spending $9,820 per student—the lowest among comparable schools—while achieving higher academic rankings than schools that spend significantly more, such as Woodward Avenue Elementary School ($12,068) and Orange City Elementary School (which spends more but ranks lower). The school has shown a positive trajectory after a post-pandemic dip, climbing back to the 58th percentile in state rankings. While it is a "middle of the pack" school with a consistent 3-star rating, its reliable performance makes it a safe choice compared to volatile neighbors like Manatee Cove Elementary School or the high-performing Ivy Hawn Charter School Of The Arts, which benefits from different socioeconomic factors.

Open Quote We have a highly experienced number of teachers with great support staff. I believe our new administrator along side with our Assistant Principal will make a world of difference this year. Community involvement has been a great part of our success. Close Quote

Open Quote The only reason this school has gone down is the district decided to redraw the boundaries and bus kids in from lower socioeconomic areas to help promote diversity. This has lowered all the grades in the school and the amount of free lunch or reduced price has gone up. They failed to realize if you bus kids in from deltona they might not be on time to school. After I drop off my kids I see all the Deltona kids coming into school late as the bus is almost always late. Your racial diversity tactic is only harming the kids by making them late everyday, those kids walk in the room with the free breakfast and so all the kids think, that is the poor kid. Ever watch a kid with a big backpack, water bottle and a tray full of food try to walk across campus in a timely fashion, not going to happen. Close Quote

Open Quote Freedom Elementary is a wonderful school for high achievers with involved parents. There are many award ceremonies and functions for said children and the school has a high district rating. The way they are able to achieve such high ratings is through segregation. They have a comparatively small number of low income and minority students and send children with special needs to separate schools. They accommodate those with only minor impairments such as ADD/ADHD and keep them all not only in a separate classroom, but often do not include them in school functions. Do to a 2011 rezoning designed to de-segregate, the statistics may have changed, but the underlying problem is still present as is the discrimination and segregation of those with special needs.
