Summary

George W. Marks Elementary School is a K-5 public school in Deland, FL, serving 780 students within the Volusia County School District, where it stands out for achieving solid academic results despite serving a community with moderate economic diversity (57% of students eligible for free or reduced lunch).

What makes this school particularly noteworthy is its consistent performance in a challenging environment. While nearby schools like Edith I. Starke Elementary School and Blue Lake Elementary School struggle with lower state rankings and higher poverty rates, George W. Marks maintains proficiency rates in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math that are competitive with district and state averages. The school also excels in keeping students in class, with a chronic absenteeism rate of 27.2% that is significantly better than the district average of 34.1% and rates at nearby schools like Orange City Elementary School (35.2%) and Edith I. Starke Elementary School (39.9%). This strong attendance culture suggests a positive and engaging school environment.

Interestingly, George W. Marks shows a clear strength in ELA, with 3rd and 5th-grade scores (62%) at or above state averages, while its Math scores (62%, 63%, 58%) consistently trail state benchmarks—a potential area for growth. The school also shines in 5th-grade Science, where it has historically outperformed both the district and state. While the nearby Ivy Hawn Charter School of the Arts serves a more affluent population and achieves top-tier results, George W. Marks provides a stable, reliable option for families, achieving better outcomes with lower per-student spending ($10,836) than some higher-funded peers. This makes it a smart choice for parents seeking a well-rounded, community-focused elementary school in Deland.

Open Quote Instead of focusing on fixing problems that matter like the terrible pick up line, the staff rather harass you about parking on the other side where there are no 30 minute lines and tell you not to drop your child off on that side because that whole parking lot with cars parked in it (as we speak) is strictly for the school buses (ironic).
