Summary

Bagdad Elementary School is a PK-5 school in Milton, FL, serving 501 students within the Santa Rosa district, where nearly 70% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

Bagdad Elementary has faced significant academic challenges in recent years, with its state ranking dropping from the 58th percentile in 2016-2017 to the 21st percentile for 2025-2026. This places it among the lowest-performing schools in the district, with math scores showing the most dramatic gaps. For example, only 38% of 5th graders were proficient in math compared to 65% district-wide, while nearby Wallace Lake K-8 achieved 89% proficiency in the same subject. The school also struggles with chronic absenteeism, with 22.3% of students chronically absent in 2023-2024—far higher than the 7.9% rate at Wallace Lake K-8. A bright spot is 3rd-grade reading, where proficiency has risen from 48% to 54%, approaching the state average of 60%.

One of the most striking findings is that Bagdad Elementary spends $12,659 per student, the highest among comparable schools in the area, yet achieves the lowest results. This is significantly more than the $8,363 spent per student at high-performing Wallace Lake K-8. This spending paradox suggests that the school's challenges are not due to a lack of funding but may be tied to factors like high poverty rates and chronic absenteeism. The school also shows a notable weakness in 5th-grade science, with only 36% proficiency compared to the district average of 59%, indicating a need for targeted instructional improvements.

Open Quote I loved Bagdad!! I went there all my young student years and I wouldn’t have went to any other school! I loved all my teachers except Mrs.Smith. Most, if not all the teachers, were nice and so were most of the kids, young and old! I wish I could go back in time.. My favorite grade was 5th I went on a lot of field trips and also Starbase was awesome and the D.A.R.E program! I also had a crush in that grade and it turned out he was a real nice guy and he wanted to just be my friend and of course, I said yes! Great school! I recommend going here! Some of the best years of my life!❤️❤️ Close Quote
