Summary

Navigator Academy Of Leadership Davenport is a public charter school in Davenport, FL, serving 977 students in grades K-8 within the Polk district, where just over half of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. The school’s most pressing challenge is a severe chronic absenteeism rate that has more than doubled in recent years, reaching 48.9% in 2023-2024—far above the state average of 31.4% and the highest among nearby schools like Horizons Elementary School and Alta Vista Elementary School. This attendance crisis is likely driving the school’s overall low academic performance, which has earned it a consistent 1-star rating from SchoolDigger over the past six years.

Academically, Navigator Academy shows a striking split between grade levels. In elementary grades (3-5), students significantly underperform the district in core subjects—for example, only 36% of 4th graders are proficient in math compared to 56% district-wide. However, in middle school (6-8), the school outperforms the district in every subject, with 65% of 6th graders proficient in ELA versus 53% district-wide. Additionally, students in advanced courses excel: 89% are proficient in Algebra 1 and 92% in Biology 1, far exceeding state averages. This creates a “barbell” effect where top-tier students thrive while many others struggle, especially in elementary math—8th-grade math proficiency has collapsed to just 8%, a critical red flag.

Compared to nearby schools, Navigator Academy’s challenges are not solely due to demographics. Davenport School Of The Arts, a K-8 magnet school just 5.4 miles away, serves a similar poverty rate (51.1%) but achieves a 4-star rating and far better outcomes. Even Mater Academy Davenport, which serves a higher-poverty population (69.4%), earns a 3-star rating. Navigator Academy also spends less per student ($7,909) than most nearby schools, which may limit resources for interventions. To improve, the school must urgently address its attendance crisis, which is undermining its potential and threatening to erode its one area of strength in middle school.

Open Quote VERY POOR COMMUNICATION WITH THE ADMINISTRATION AND BOARD. PRINCIPAL IS RACIST AND NEVER WANTS TO HEAR THE TRUTH(EVEN WITH PROOF).WHAT THE SCHOOL OFFERS IS ONLY FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL ONLY. BULLYING IS A BIG PROBLEM. THEY WENT THRU OVER 20+ STAFF MEMBERS SINCE SCHOOL STARTED BECAUSE THEY WERE TREATED POORLY. THEY CAN NOT HANDEL KIDS WITH SPEICAL NEEDS. THEY DIDNT HAVE A TEACHER FOR ONLINE KIDS FOR OVER 3 WEEKS. THEY BLAME EVERYTHING ON THE PARENTS. Close Quote
