Summary

James B. Sanderlin K-8 is a public school in St. Petersburg, FL, serving 817 students from kindergarten through 8th grade, and it stands out as a high-performing option in the Pinellas district with a consistent 4-star rating and a unique K-8 structure that provides a stable learning path through middle school.

This school excels in advanced math, with 100% of students proficient in Geometry and 79% in Algebra 1 on end-of-course exams, far exceeding district and state averages. It also boasts a low chronic absenteeism rate of just 11.3%, which is less than half the rates at nearby schools like Melrose Elementary (57.4%) and Campbell Park Elementary (59.2%). This suggests a highly engaged student body and a positive school culture. Additionally, Sanderlin achieves these results with lower per-student spending ($11,046) compared to lower-performing neighbors like Maximo Elementary ($21,650), indicating efficient resource use.

While Sanderlin shows strong, consistent performance across most grades and subjects, there is a notable concern in 7th-grade math, where only 6% of students were proficient in 2025-2026, a sharp drop from previous years. This may be partly due to top students taking Algebra 1 instead, but it warrants attention. Overall, Sanderlin is an exceptional school in its area, forming a cluster of high achievers with Midtown Academy and Lakeview Fundamental Elementary, while many surrounding elementary schools struggle with lower rankings and higher absenteeism. Its steady improvement over time makes it a strong choice for families seeking quality education through 8th grade.

Open Quote The school is now over 800 students. In my opinion the school needs to work harder on communication and center on empathy. The principal and some of the admin are very insolent and irreverent in my experience and to parents I've spoken with. Would like to see district put a principal and admin in this school that has an IB educational background. Unfortunately, it's Florida so you get what we vote into office. Close Quote

Open Quote I have been attempting to visit my scholars classroom and have been shut down multiple times which makes me wonder. I emailed administrator and never received direct contact from them. This school makes me very unwelcomed and is not what expected. I am considering to reenroll my scholar into his previous zoned school. The teacher is not pleasant to deal with and instead of the principal emailing me, she tells the teacher to respond on her behalf. This is so impersonal. Close Quote
